This week in our class,
  • Students have been reviewing and learning rounding to higher numbers, using traditional algorithms for addition and subtraction with regrouping, finding the expanded form of numbers and learning flexible thinking strategies to add when one of the addends can be rounded to a nearest ten, hundred or thousand.
  • In language arts, students have been learning about implicit information and background knowledge, and how to identify good evidence to support long response questions when reading fictional texts. Students have also continued their personalized reading journeys through independent reading, and with the iReady My Path skill practice for comprehension. We have also started reading a new novel, Wonder, by R.J. Palacio, the first person narration of the life of a 10 year old with a rare disease that has kept him from attending regular schooling until now, and how he navigates the world of middle school friendships.
  • In science, we have started investigating living organisms and the scientific inquiry process.
  • And during our self-reflection period, we have been reflecting on the importance of keeping quiet moments throughout the day, not only because it helps our thinking and learning process, but also because the repeated unnecessary noise can cause other students to develop headaches and dizziness.
Have a fantastic weekend!

Dear Families,
This fourth grade group of kids know the meaning of perseverance, and hard work that pays off. This week, my students have started completing the iReady assessments, and although some of them are still working on it, many of them are showing improvement and growth. But that is not the only thing we have been working on. Here are a few other highlights:
In math, we have completed the unit on fractions and decimals and started learning to use the standard algorithm for subtraction.
In Language Arts, we have continued identifying the setting of a story, and understanding how different settings influence the choices of the characters. We have continued working on making full open responses to reading comprehension questions with more independence, and we have completed our Trickster Tales lessons that we are now in the slow editing process.
Last week our students also worked with Mrs. Pilkington’s and Mrs. Smith’s Kindergarten students on a geometry craft activity, remaking a square into other shapes, and students have continued making progress in the different online platforms, XTra Math, ST Math and iReady.
The learning continues even in short weeks!
Have a fantastic weekend!
